Happy Birthday Miami!

Hello all! It's Wednesday once again! This week is special, however. Yesterday was the 200th anniversary of the chartering of Miami University. We were founded on February 17th, 1809 as an institution of higher learning, committed to a liberal arts education. Our name comes from the Miami Indian tribe, which inhabited the surrounding region. Two hundred years later we are able to celebrate this monumental occasion.

On Miami's birthday, a special tribute took place, allowing member of the Miami community to join together to honor the university. Members of the Miami Indian tribe, currently located in Oklahoma, the U.S. Postal Service and a special address from President were the main portions of the birthday celebration. Students also participated by giving musical performances and portraying historical Miami figures.
As part of the festivity, Miami is holding a special Charter Day Ball. The Charter Day Ball is held once every three years, but at it is the Bicentennial celebration, this year's ball is sure to be extra festive. Thousands will gather on Saturday, February 21st, dressed to the nines, at Millet Hall for the monumental night. Students, faculty, alumni and members of the surrounding community will gather to eat, dance and celebrate the Miami tradition and its partnership with the city of Oxford.

It is an exciting time to be a Miamian!
