Go RedHawks!
Love and honor to Miami,
Our college old and grand.
Proudly we shall ever hail thee
Over all the land.
FIGHT! FIGHT! FIGHT!
Alma Mater now we praise thee,
Sing joyfully this lay.
Love and honor to Miami,
Forever and a day.
The fight song can be heard almost every Friday and Saturday night during the winter echoing across Miami’s campus from the Goggin Ice Center. Recently constructed, the Goggin Ice Center houses Miami’s Men’s Ice Hockey Team and the Women’s Synchronized Skating Team, as well as countless intramural broomball teams and physical education classes. Above is a video clip from a recent hockey game against Northern Michigan after a Miami goal. It doesn’t quite do the atmosphere justice, but I think it gives a great example of Miami spirit and enthusiasm.
Our hockey team, just one of Miami’s 17 varsity sports, competes in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA) against teams like Ohio State, Michigan, Michigan State, and Notre Dame. Our team is currently ranked #9 in the nation and is getting ready to host our big rival, Ohio State, this weekend. In the past few years, Miami has ascended to become one of the CCHA’s (and the nation’s) elite teams. It was just three years ago that Miami achieved its first #1 ranking in any sport and last season saw a marquee matchup between #1 Miami and #2 Michigan at the Goggin. Miami plays exciting, high-scoring hockey which has led to an enormous increase of fans, not just among students but in the surrounding area and nationally. This year’s senior class has won over 100 games—the most of any class in Miami hockey history. They have also advanced to the NCAA playoffs for four consecutive years, making it to the final 8 twice.
In conjunction with the hockey game against Ohio State this weekend and Miami’s recent Bicentennial Celebration, a few student organizations have organized the “Bicentennial Blackout” to help our players defeat the Buckeyes. Students are encouraged to wear black and shirts will be available for purchase throughout the week on campus. Hopefully, the team will rise to the occasion and be able to send the senior class off with a well-deserved sweep of our rivals in front of an energized crowd.
Let’s go RedHawks! Sweep OSU!
Love and Honor,
Matt Hoffman
