Happy 200th Birthday, Abraham Lincoln!

Happy 200th Birthday, Abraham Lincoln!

Today marks the 200th birthday of our 16th US President, Abraham Lincoln. Recently on our campus, Lydia Smith, a first year psychology major, had an interesting experience relating to our former President. She was transcribing a letter written by Lincoln in 1863 for a class project and saw something on the document that she thought could be Lincoln’s thumbprint.
The Papers of Abraham Lincoln, a project of the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency and Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum, reviewed and confirmed that is was indeed a thumbprint of his! This discovery makes it the second rare fingerprint of the 16th president housed at Miami’s libraries.

What was Lydia doing transcribing one of his letters you might ask? The project she was working on is designed to encourage appreciation and spark intellectual curiosity through the transcription and recreation of historic letters.

What an exciting discovery for one of our first year students so close to Lincoln's 200th birthday and just a few days away until Miami celebrates our 200th birthday on February 17!
