While many Miami students pack up their belongings to head south for next week’s spring break, others choose to spend their vacations in a familiar place: southwest Ohio. Students from our Hamilton campus will participate in both service and research as they work with impoverished communities in the area. The eleven participants will engage in a poverty simulation to begin this week-long project. These students will work with local homeless shelters, nonprofit agencies, faith-based organizations and businesses to learn about the impact of joblessness and poverty in the area throughout the week. Seven of the participants will also be presenting at IMPACT, a national conference on advocacy, social justice and service March 19-21 in Little Rock, AR. This presentation will relate to their experience with STAY-cation, and explore poverty and joblessness’ impact on local communities.
Many other Miami students will participate in alternative spring break trips next week, including studying eco-tourism and participating in service learning in Dominica; service learning in Tijuana; and volunteering with Ambassadors for Children in Jamaica and Columbia. Whenever your spring break rolls around, consider participating in a service project like many Miami students choose to do!
